  • Russia accuses US of 'interfering' in Iran

Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said the US move to call the meeting was a "bogus pretext" to include "purely political issues" surrounding Iran on the Security Council agenda.

At least 21 people were killed and 450 were arrested in the protests, many in clashes with security forces trying to quell the rallies.

Russia's deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, criticized the U.S. push to hold Friday's meeting as an intrusion into Iranian affairs. (Tehran's police chief announced last week that women won't be arrested for failing to wear one in public.) The unrest is reportedly due to economic conditions - not exactly a shock for a country that is still reeling from years of U.S. -led sanctions.

Yet the U.S. and President Trump also face a dilemma. This is a mistake by the Security Council, he said.

What will be the fallout from Iran's protests? Yet any surge in material prosperity Rouhani delivers is certain to undermine the religious faith undergirding the theocratic regime.

These blacklists were included in the sanctions, and barred U.N. members from participating in business with these companies. There has been some question as to whether Donald Trump expressing support could help or hinder.

Iran's Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri argued that the president's detractors, as well as the Islamic Republic's "enemies, " including theUnited States, may have triggered the protests.

People protest in Los Angeles, California, U.S., in support of anti-government protesters in Iran, January 3, 2018. "Every U.N. member state is sovereign, but member states cannot use sovereignty as a shield when they categorically deny their people human rights and fundamental freedoms".

Obama would not do even that, however. He also said he believed anyone who burned Iran's flag should be sentenced to death.

State television showed live pictures of rallies in several cities, including central Shahr-e Kord where hundreds, many clutching umbrellas, had gathered despite heavy snowfall. "Will it address the legitimate concerns of its people or suppress the voices of its own populace?" Unrest spread to more than 80 cities and rural towns as thousands of young and working-class Iranians voiced anger at corruption, unemployment and a deepening gap between rich and poor. They can tell a compelling story about how the problems of the country are problems caused by the regime, giving the resistance a sense of purpose, wealth, organization and expertise.

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting at the request of the US on Friday to discuss the anti-government protests that rocked Iran last week.

"We are also very concerned at reports that the Government has blocked the internet on mobile networks, and that social media services like Instagram and messaging services like Telegram have been shut down in an attempt to quell the protests". But Western news agencies insist there were anti-government protests as recently as Friday.
