Northern Ireland football manager Michael O'Neill has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

Police confirmed a man, 48, has been charged "in connection with drink driving".

He is due to appear at court on October 10, two days after Northern Ireland travel to play Norway in their last World Cup Qualifier.

The Irish Football Association added: 'The Irish Football Association is aware of an alleged drink-driving incident involving Michael O'Neill.

The dad of two was tipped to replace Scotland manager Gordon Strachan earlier this year after the national side's dire start in the World Cup qualifying campaign.

Newspaper reports claim O'Neill, 48, was detained near Edinburgh, Scotland on Sunday.

During his playing career, Mr O'Neill won 33 caps for Northern Ireland and scored seven goals.

He has enjoyed considerable success during his five-and-a-half-year tenure, guiding the team to their first ever European Championship finals last year.

'He is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on 10 October'.

They are second in Group C behind Germany and look set to clinch one of the play-off berths, which will give them a chance to reach their fourth World Cup finals in Russian Federation next year.

O'Neill, who has previously managed Brechin City and Shamrock Rovers, signed a new deal with the IFA past year and is under contract until 2020. He led them to be the first League of Ireland side to qualify for the Europa League group stage.
