FIA take 'no further action' against Vettel, Kimi, Max

  • The car of Ferrari's driver Kimi Raikkonen is seen after a crash as Ferrari's driver Sebastian Vettel leads during the Formula One Singapore Grand Prix in Singapore

'Driver of vehicle 7 had a very good start and was able to attempt overtaking of auto 33 on the left hand side.

Verstappen and Raikkonen both made good starts and tried to pass Vettel down the inside, only for the three to crash together and all retire due to the damage sustained.

Red Bull dominated all three practise sessions, with Verstappen posting the fastest time in the third and final practise and Ricciardo setting lap records in Friday's two sessions.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, who also emerged from the opening lap carnage unscathed, was second for the third year in a row with Finland's Valtteri Bottas completing the podium for Mercedes. Who would've known that would happen.

"God blessed me today, for sure", he said later, dripping with champagne.

"I capitalised on the incident".

"You will have to manage things for yourself", said his race engineer, rendered helpless by the lack of data.

Verstappen, who had started from second, blamed Vettel.

The Briton's description of how he felt hustling his Mercedes around the streets of the city-state could also apply to his hopes of staying ahead in the championship after Sunday's race.

Daniil Kvyat, Marcus Ericsson (both accidents), Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen (both mechanical) joined the big names on the DNF list before the end of the race - which was shortened from the scheduled 61 laps to just 58 inside the two-hour time limit by the various safety auto interventions - but there was little drama out front, with the biggest question marks surrounding the point at which it was judicious to move from grooved rubber to slicks.

"I don't know, I didn't see that much", Vettel told TV crews when asked to describe the accident.

"We are in a position that we don't like to be with P5 and P6, but this provides opportunities, strategic opportunities, and our auto was very good on the softs", he said.

The FIA has said the incident will be investigated after the race.

"Initially Sebastian saw I was a little bit better off the line than him and he wanted to close me off, and maybe didn't see Kimi on the left", Verstappen said.

Daniil Kvyat put his Toro Rosso into the Turn 7 wall amid tricky conditions on Lap 11, and Marcus Ericsson crashed his Sauber on the Anderson Bridge on Lap 38.

Alonso, meanwhile, bravely continued but retired on lap 9.
