  • Trump ramps up threats to N Korea, says 'fire and fury' wasn't tough enough

On Thursday, President Donald Trump doubled down on his threats to unleash "fire and fury" on North Korea, pushing back against criticism that his aggressive rhetoric might backfire and inflame tensions.

A White House statement said Trump and President Emmanuel Macron had discussed "the increasingly risky situation associated with North Korea's destabilising and escalatory behaviour". The recent UN Security Council unanimous vote for new sanctions suggests that these countries could help.

Trump has stepped up warnings that Kim's regime would face a devastating military strike if it continued threatening the U.S. On Friday, he said that if Kim makes any "overt threat" or strike at a U.S. territory or ally "he will truly regret it and he will regret it fast". "This is tragicomedy of its own making". My last visit to North Korea was in May 2011 when I led a delegation of Elders (former presidents of Ireland and Finland and former prime minister of Norway) to assure the delivery of donated food directly to needy people.

The comments came after Trump unleashed a slew of fresh threats against North Korea on Friday, declaring the US military "locked and loaded". For one, they didn't want to put somebody in a corner.

Professor Lucas said: "The Chinese and the USA have been talking behind the scenes for months about what to do".

The report quotes Xi as saying: "At present, the relevant parties must maintain restraint and avoid words and deeds that would exacerbate the tension on the Korean Peninsula".

"Trump reiterated to President Macron the United States' commitment to stop the North Korean nuclear menace".

The ministry did not confirm whether Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera has already issued an order to shoot down incoming missiles. Trump has often used sharp words to argue that China isn't doing enough to rein in North Korea, and has threatened punitive measures on trade if Xi fails to act. Trump's comments, however, do not appear to be backed by significant military mobilization on either side of the Pacific, and an important, quiet diplomatic channel remains open.

"I think it's only fair to point out he inherited this crisis", Mr. Gore told Newsweek.
