  • All Blacks captain Kieran Read says the shared spoils against the Lions have served up some key lessons for his side

After the worst week in its worst season in memory, the code in Australia is crying out for some reason to feel hopeful for the future.

Cheika has six Western Force players in his squad preparing for their August 19 clash against New Zealand in Sydney, which doubles as the opening game of the Rugby Championship and a Bledisloe Cup match.

Bookmakers have shown what they think of their chances, with Australia $6.25 long shots and New Zealand playing just $1.12 to win.

The new-look Wallabies have been working on their fitness in recent weeks and while Cheika hinted that he could pinch a leaf out of the British and Irish Lions' playbook by looking to pressure the All Blacks with their defence.

"So that extra experience, we've had an excellent training camp, strong, we've trained hard, and they're getting their belief".

"They've got something that we know if they put it together they're a unsafe side." he said.

Do I have any regrets? "I really do not know how this work is done, but I do understand that it has to be done and done well". Actually, from the time I came in, there have been elements working against me, some of them from within the CBFC.

"The target needs to be to put New Zealand under pressure", Cheika told Channel Nine earlier.

"Then we will see what happens from there, we'll see if we can take the pickings".

But Cheika said he believed the right steps have been taken to "renovate" the Wallabies squad since their World Cup final loss to the All Blacks in 2015.

"I've had almost 20 new caps between that World Cup, there's probably only 12 of those players from that squad left".

Trying to win back the Bledisloe Cup for the first time since 2003 should help his Western Force players deal with the disappointment of their side being cut from Super Rugby, Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has said.

"Rugby has got a huge volunteer network around the country growing there in Perth obviously so that's going to be hard for them to take".
