Venezuela's defense minister says that security forces have captured the mastermind of a failed assault on a military base a week ago.

Venezuela is facing its worst political crisis in decades.

The White House later said that Mr Maduro had requested a phone call with the American president.

Trump said the crisis in Venezuela was one of the topics discussed during talks Friday in New Jersey with his secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.

"Whoever betrays the nation, whoever takes up arms against the FANB will receive exemplary punishment", he said, referring to Venezuela's armed forces.

Venezuela's Defence Minister accused Mr Trump of "an act of madness" calling the US President's comments about military options "an act of supreme extremism".

Violent demonstrations since April have left more than 120 people dead.

Maduro and other top Venezuelan officials were sanctioned by the Trump administration in July after Maduro installed a constituent assembly composed of the loyalists of his Socialist Party, and cracked down on and arrested many opposition figures, a move that drew condemnation from world leaders. Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro on August 7 on his public television show Sundays with Maduro welcomed this intention to participate and again repeated his call for dialogue and reconciliation via the electoral route.

"The vice president's trip will highlight the divide between the past and present of Latin America", said Jarrod Agen, a Pence spokesman, in a statement sent before Trump's Thursday comments.

"The time has come for worldwide organizations and multilateral forums in the region and in the world to reaffirm the validity of the norms of global law and to curb the most aggressive action of the U.S. empire against the Venezuelan people in more than a hundred years".

Following the meeting Arreaza is expected to deliver a government statement responding to Trump's remarks, which have been panned by government allies as a dramatic escalation of the country's political conflict.

US officials previewing the trip before Trump's remarks said Venezuela is expected to feature prominently in Pence's discussions with leaders.

The South American nation is also embroiled in an economic crisis that has led many to leave the country in search of easier access to food and medicine.
