At 12:43 p.m. ET (1643 GMT), the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 49.69 points, or 0.23 percent, at 21,893.7 and the S&P 500 was up 6.84 points, or 0.28 percent, at 2,445.05.

Reuters data show a 22 per cent perceived chance for a rate hike after the Fed's December meeting.

The CBOE Volatility Index, a barometer of expected near-term stock market volatility, closed at its highest since the US presidential election on Thursday, but was down 1.22 points at 14.82 points on Friday.

The Nasdaq composite gained 32 points, or 0.5%, to 6,249.

Ongoing global glut concerns lingered in oil markets despite a bigger-than-expected draw in United States crude inventories, leaving prices volatile.

The MSCI World index slipped 0.15%, extending Thursday's 1.1% drop, its biggest one-day slide since May 17.

Markets had seen a tentative recovery in risk appetite in US and early Asian trading, but as the war of words resumed Asian stocks dropped back and London, Frankfurt and Paris all lost 0.5-1.2 per cent.
