In an editorial Tuesday, nationalistic state-run tabloid Global Times saidSouth Korea should "act as a buffer" between the USA and North Korea and urged Seoul to halt the upcoming joint military exercise.
The president's statement came amid seemingly easing tensions between neighboring communist North Korea and South Korean ally the United States, which in recent weeks have engaged in a rhetorical battle that many feared would put both nations on a path toward a nuclear war.
And in Washington, senior officials, while insisting the U.S. military stands ready to respond to any aggression from Pyongyang, stressed that they are working in close coordination with both South Korea and Japan.

Trump threatened Pyongyang that it would be met with "fire and fury" if provoked, and also tweeted that the United States was "locked and loaded".
"No one can make a decision on military action on the Korean peninsula without our agreement", he said.
Moon's comments follow a spike in animosity generated by North Korea's warning that it might send missiles into waters near the US territory of Guam, and by Trump's warlike language.
The North's leader Kim Jong-Un said Tuesday he would "watch a little more" before making a decision on the Guam missile launch, a declaration Trump lauded as "very wise". Japan is also holding annual military drills with the USA over the next few weeks. "We should take the initiative in solving the problem on the Korean Peninsula". -China trade. Moon was elected in May after a near-decade of conservative rule that saw animosity deepen between the rival Koreas.
There are feelings of bewilderment and powerlessness: Why should South Korea get sucked into a crisis created by a war of words between leaders in Washington and Pyongyang?
Moon, who was elected in May, is a liberal who has said he wants to engage the North. "Even if peace and negotiations require pain and patience, we must do so", Moon said. They were expected to discuss North Korea's nuclear weapons progress and to reinforce their longstanding alliance. "Regardless of whatever twist and turns we could experience, the North Korean nuclear program should absolutely be solved peacefully, and the (South Korean) government and the USA government don't have a different position on this".
"I think the North perfecting an ICBM, loading an atomic warhead on it and weaponizing it is a red line".
But he said there will not be war on the Korean Peninsula, stressing that the United States has promised to seek the South's consent before taking any military action against the North.
"I am confident that the USA will respond to the current situation in a calm and responsible manner in line with our policy direction", Moon said. Moon didn't elaborate, but many foreign experts have viewed the North's possessing a reliable ICBM as a tripwire for potential US strikes.
Impoverished North Korea hates the drills in part because it must frequently respond with its own expensive displays of military might.
