In June, Arizona became the sixth state to declare a statewide emergency in response to the opioid epidemic, according to the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. "The recent report by the Commission on Drug Addiction and Opioid Abuse was further evidence of the severity of this epidemic". "We've known for quite some time that we have a significant issue with opioid overuse, abuse, overdose in this county".

"It is a serious problem the likes of which we have never had", Trump said at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf resort, where he is on a "working vacation". "People that are drug traffickers deserve a significant penalty for their crime, they're threatening the health and safety of our citizens".

"I know that physicians and other providers have oftentimes sensed that there is an incentive to provide narcotic medication and we need to do all that we can to make certain that, yes, people are provided appropriate narcotic medication when necessary, but no more than necessary", Price said. There's never been anything like whats happened to this country over the last four or five years.

Trump said earlier in the week that the country would "win" the battle against drug addiction but ignored the recommendation from the presidential opioid commission, led by Christie, to announce it as an emergency.

National estimates found almost 33,000 people died in 2015 due to opioid overdose, but several reports have found even those numbers could be severely underreported, meaning the total number of overdoses could be much higher.

"The opioid crisis is an emergency and I'm saying officially right now it is an emergency", Mr. Trump said.

President Trump has declared the opioid addiction crisis facing the USA a "national emergency" after his advisers warned that more Americans die from drug overdoses than gun homicides and vehicle crashes combined.

"I'm glad the president is stepping up and declaring a national emergency", Newtown police Chief Tom Synan said.

McMaster, the President's top national security aide, has recommended increasing the number of United States troops deployed to bolster American forces in the country. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., said in a statement.

Frankly, Trump's waffling - not to mention the dated approach to opioid addiction he initially espoused - was an insult to Christie's work. Under laws that outline national emergencies, the government can open up additional funding to states and provide technical assistance and manpower to places where local and state resources have been overwhelmed.
