Paul Ryan: I Heard New Trump 'Doctrine' in Afghan Speech

22 Août, 2017, 06:57 | Author: Claudine Rigal
  • President Donald Trump talks with House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wis. in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington. Republican leaders on Wednesday Aug. 16 tiptoed around Trump's extraordinary comments on white

Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, who grew up in the same city as Ryan.

"You're not a good person if you're there", Ryan said.

Ryan opens his statement by applauding the grace of Heather Heyer's family and mentioning how news of what was happening in Charlottesville ended his family's camping trip. Ryan said, adding that it would be the "worst thing we could do".

"We can not allow another safe haven for terrorists to materialize again", Mr. Ryan said, labeling what he saw as a new Trump doctrine: "principled realism".

Ryan says he's pleased that Trump is moving away from having a timetable for withdrawing from Afghanistan and wants to prevent creating a safe haven for terrorists.

Some Democrats have been pushing for the House to censure the President over his "both sides" comments, but Ryan--who earlier admitted the President "messed up"--thinks that's going way too far.

Mr. Ryan; the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky; and White House officials have said that rewriting the tax code is a priority.

Ryan has held numerous events in Wisconsin, but he's only taken questions from the public in controlled environments such as private businesses.

CNN preselected the attendees at Monday's town hall, primarily from Mr. Ryan's district, and questions they asked.

CNN extended invitations to people from Ryan's district and selected which questions will be asked.

Ryan argued that white supremacy violated America's founding principles, and he said elected officials bore a responsibility to unite Americans during times of crisis.

Instead of censuring Trump, Ryan said "all of us have to try to do better" to address racism.
