According to the poll conducted by Marist, with a sample size was 1,125 people, surveyed by landline and cellphone, "Fifty-two percent of people surveyed said Trump's response to the violence was insufficient, while 27 percent said his reaction was strong enough and 21 percent remained unsure".

Just over two-thirds of Republicans said they approve of Trump's response to the attack.

The jump in support for impeachment since Trump's first month in office is attributable to increased opposition to the president from Democrats and independents. However, only seven percent of Republicans polled in favor of his removal. But the poll results suggest that as more GOP figures pivot away from the president's rhetoric, they're also distancing themselves from a loyal Trump base which is reluctant to criticize even his most contentious viewpoints.

The PRRI poll was conducted August 2-8, before the violent White supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which killed one person on Saturday.

Sixty-three percent of Americans, overall, said it was. Slate reported that there was a 65 percent chance that he would be removed (or remove himself) from office.

Thirty-five 35 percent said it was accurate.

The report reflects the increasingly stark divide between Democrats and Republicans in how they view Trump's potential impeachment, along with attitudes toward the investigation into the Trump campaign's possible collusion with Russian Federation to sway the 2016 election.

Brad Sherman (D-California) and Al Green (D-Texas) have already introduced articles of impeachment against Trump earlier in the summer.

On Thursday, Aug. 17, Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee tweeted he planned to introduce articles of impeachment against Trump in relation to his comments on Charlottesville. The poll also showed Trump's favorability rating is at 38 percent, while 56 percent of people view him unfavorably.

So who are the most hardcore groups of Trump backers?

Support for Trump's response was low across different races as well, with 31 percent of white Americans, 20 percent of Hispanics, and only 13 percent of African-Americans saying they agreed with his statements.
