  • Maria Sharapova in action during her first round win over Jennifer Brady in Stanford

And Sharapova, who returned to competitive action this week following a leg injury, chose to pull out of the event in Stanford ahead of her second-round clash with Lesia Tsurenko to prevent the injury from getting worse.

Sharapova was denied a wildcard for the French Open earlier this year, and was unable to take part in qualifying for Wimbledon because of injury.

Sharapova, who beat Jennifer Brady in three sets in her first match in Stanford, has been forced to pull out of the tournament due to a left forearm issue. After yesterday's scan my doctor has recommended I don't risk further injury.

"I feel like I just want to hug everyone and say thank you", said Sharapova, ranked 171st in the world. "I would be happy to continue his speech, but must make such decision as a preventive measure", - quotes Sharapova official site WTA.

Pence is on a multi-nation tour meant to show USA support for its allies in the region. A spokesman said USA officials are assessing how to respond to Putin.

In what was her first match on U.S. soil since March 2015 following her 15-month doping ban, the 30-year-old was made to work hard by Brady, eventually prevailing 6-1 4-6 6-0 in two hours and four minutes.

The five-time Grand Slam champion made the announcement on Wednesday.

The US Open starts on August 28 but Sharapova is now not in the field.

It is now down at 171 following a 15-month doping ban which ended in April and her thigh injury which occurred just weeks into her comeback in Rome. However this latest injury not only puts participation in those tournaments in jeopardy, it also hinders her ability to build her ranking up so that she is not at the mercy of tournaments supplying her with them.
