Korea slams new United States travel ban for Pyongyang

Washington's State Department has declared USA passports invalid for travel to, in or through North Korea.

North Korea slammed the U.S. by saying the visitors with good will are welcomed in their nation after the USA issued a ban on travelling to North Korea. The spokesperson also called the travel ban a "childish measure" and "a reflection of the USA administration's perception which regards the DPRK as an enemy".

He said its objective was to prevent U.S. citizens from seeing "the true picture of North Korea that has achieved victory after victory".

KCNA did not name Warmbier in Friday's report but said the North had delivered "just punishment" to some USA citizens who had carried out acts against the regime.

North Korea's doors are still open to U.S. tourists, Pyongyang said Friday, despite Washington banning its citizens from travelling there following the death of a United States student who had been jailed in the country.

"It is also a reflection of the US administration's perception which regards the DPRK as an enemy", the KCNA added in the English dispatch.

The U.S. government last month said it would bar Americans from travelling to North Korea due to the risk of "long-term detention" there.

The North claimed that a sovereign state has a right to punish criminals under the law, defending itself against the angry reaction from the USA following Warmbier's death. Japan says North Korea has also detained at least several dozen of its nationals.

The DPRK will become the only country that US passport holders are forbidden to travel to.

Washington has also said U.S. nationals who are resident in the country must have left by this date.

Journalists and humanitarian workers may apply for exceptions to the ban, the department said in a public notice.

The spokesman called on the Donald Trump administration to abandon its hostile policy towards North Korea.

"If the USA government says Americans can not come to this country, we don't care a bit", Han Chol Su, vice-director of the Wonsan Zone Development Corporation, said.

An article on Friday cited an unidentified Foreign Ministry official as saying worldwide tourists had nothing to fear about going to North Korea, but defended the country's right to punish foreign criminals as it sees fit.

The State Department has prohibited American passport holders from traveling to the secretive state after September 1.
