The video was taken Friday evening over the Gulf of Mexico. It made a second landfall on August 30 near the Texas-Louisiana border, this time as a tropical storm with sustained winds of 45 miles per hour (73 km/h).

It later downgraded to a tropical storm.

NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have been keeping an eye on the storm with satellites, aircraft and even the International Space Station collecting data and transmitting constant updates almost as fast as the rain has been pounding the planet. Its Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the NASA-NOAA Suomi Satellite sent back an eerie image after dark (below).

The center's leadership team continues to closely monitor weather conditions and the overall situation in Houston, and is preparing a full assessment of the center's status once the storm abates.

But perhaps the most dramatic glimpse of the storm has come from the crew aboard the International Space Station, where astronaut Jack Fischer photographed Harvey in stunning detail.

NASA's Johnson Space Center will be closed to non-essential personnel through Labor Day on September 4 as a result of the weather conditions in Houston, Texas and the impact of Tropical Storm Harvey. Randy Bresnik, a NASA astronaut living on the station, tweeted a photo of sunrise and wrote, "Houston is reporting blue sky for the first time in many days!" The facility is closed through Labor Day to all but mission-critical staff due to the flooding. "Here's a prayer for family, friends and everyone in Hurricane Harvey's path - stay safe", astronaut Jack Fischer, now in the ISS, posted photos of the storm on his Twitter, when orbiting over hurricane Harvey.

As of Tuesday morning (Aug. 29), Harvey had dumped 42 inches (107 centimeters) of rain on JSC, according to the center's emergency communications Twitter account.

At the time of writing, 18 people have died as direct result of Hurricane Harvey, a storm that has battered and flooded the coastal areas of Texas, and now is beginning to move into neighbouring Louisiana. On average, southwest Louisiana and nearby areas are expected to receive 3 to 6 inches (8 cm to 15 cm) of rainfall as Harvey moves north, but isolated areas could receive as much as 10 inches (25 cm), according to the agency.
