  • Facing North Korean nuclear threat, Guam Catholics urged to 'look to God'

A threat from North Korea to strike the US territory of Guam has everybody from President Donald Trump to Americans who had to Google, "What is Guam?" talking about the small island.

Rodong Sinmun, North Korea's official newspaper, said the volunteers had offered to join or re-join the People's Army after the Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) issued a statement condemning new sanctions imposed by the United Nations in retaliation for North Korean missile tests.

China's President Xi Jinping has urged Donald Trump and North Korea to avoid "words and actions" that worsen tensions, state media say.

On a tiny island in the western Pacific, about 7,000 USA military personnel and their families are in the middle of the increasingly tense confrontation with North Korea.

Trump said this week the US would unleash "fire and fury" on North Korea if it continued to threaten the U.S.

It is understood that the range of some missiles could enable an attack on the USA mainland, however, the island of Guam is 2100 miles away from North Korea and is a United States military base.

The governor said he is more concerned with ensuring that decisions over the North Korea's threats are executed very carefully. That was followed by the release of photos showing North Korea had a miniature nuclear weapon that could fit in a missile head.

"I think escalating the rhetoric is the wrong answer", Merkel added. With 6,000 United States troops, the island houses Andersen Air Force Base and Naval Base Guam. The plan would be sent to leader Kim Jong Un for approval just before or as the U.S.

Cicilline said Trump's bellicose language against North Korea has raised alarms around the world, adding that "if the president will not defuse this situation, then Congress must".

North Korea has always denied any wrongdoing.

South Korean presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said it "acknowledged active efforts" by Washington and Beijing to resolve the tension caused by a series of North Korean provocations.

The U.S. -South Korea exercises are an annual event, but they come as Pyongyang says it's readying a plan to fire off four medium-range missiles toward Guam, a U.S. territory and major military hub.

The president's recent comments are in response to Kim threatening a missile attack on US territory Guam.

After North Korea conducted a successful intercontinental ballistic missile test in early July, Hawaii issued an emergency response plan for residents to prepare them for a possible North Korean missile strike.

In a bid to show strength, Mr Trump vowed to respond with "fire and fury" if Pyongyang continued to threaten the US.

"Let her speak for Germany", Trump said, when asked about the comment.

"We are with you a thousand percent", Mr Trump said, according to video of the call posted on Mr Calvo's Facebook page. State-run media ensures that the population gets the North Korean side of the story, but doesn't convey any sense of global concern about the situation.

This, of course, all comes following North Korea being handed new sanctions by the United Nations on Saturday.
