CAIRO-Egypt's transport minister said Sunday that he has accepted the railway authority chief's resignation over a deadly train crash near the coastal city of Alexandria that killed 43 people and injured many more.

Transport Minister Hisham Arafat said "human error" led to the collision but did not elaborate.

A witness said the trains rose into the air "forming a pyramid" as they slammed into each other just outside a suburban station in the Mediterranean port city.

Earlier on Sunday, an administrative prosecution suspended eight railway officials, while prosecutors in Alexandria have ordered the 15-day detention of the drivers of the two trains, state-run news agency MENA reported.

Egypt's railway system has a poor safety record, mostly blamed on decades of badly maintained equipment and poor management.

Figures recently released by the state's statistics agency show that 1,249 train accidents took place previous year, the highest number since 2009, when the figure was 1,577.

Egypt's latest train disaster saw two trains collide on the Cairo-Alexandria mainline on Friday, leading to the deaths of 41 people and injuring scores more.
