The weekend box office numbers are in and it looks like horror film Annabelle: Creation took the top spot after earning $35 million in its opening weekend! The film is set in The Conjuring series of films, and is the second Annabelle film and fourth in the series. Instead, "Creation" has almost matched the opening results of the first "Annabelle", which made $37.1 million in 2014. That's an impressive hold for the war film, which has already garnered Oscar buzz. In third place is the animated sequel to The Nut Job, titled The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature, grossing a low $8.9 million. The movie, a telling of the Stephen King series starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, received mediocre reviews and failed to strike a chord with audiences in its first weekend. It's the sequel that no one asked for and still got, with many critics giving it negative reviews (it now has an 11% on Rotten Tomatoes).
Sony's The Dark Tower also continued to be a disappointment, falling 58.9 percent for an additional $7.8 million. With a $60 million budget, the movie will need to do well overseas to make a profit. Audiences gave the film a B on CinemaScore, same as its predecessor.
