  • New Doctor Who Showrunner Always Wanted A Female Doctor

It was announced yesterday (Sunday) that Whittaker is next in line to play the time lord - and will be the 13th actor - and first woman - to take on the role.

An anxious day for thousands of Dr Who fans has ended with the news that Jodie Whittaker will replace Peter Capaldi as Dr Who.

Gillian Anderson led the congratulations for Jodie Whittaker after the actress was unveiled as the first-ever female Doctor Who.

"Doctor Who" was first made in 1963, but its current incarnation dates back to a 2005 reboot with Christopher Eccleston in the title role.

Fans were treated to a brief glimpse of Whittaker, walking towards the Tardis in a forest, in a clip shown after the Wimbledon tennis final on BBC television.

"I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender", she said.

According to the BBC , journalist Khaled Zian tweeted: 'The return of the Haia [religious police] here is a must'. Wael al-Gassim, the writer and philosopher, told the BBC he was "shocked to see those angry, scary tweets".

TV critic Maureen Ryan, writing in the Variety trade publication, was more circumspect: "I do want to see a woman of colour, or a non-white man, as the Doctor, of course. She's going to be awesome!" while The Night Of star Riz Ahmed wrote, "Jodie Whittaker is an incredible actress, an wonderful person, and I'm so glad she's the new #DoctorWho".

"This is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that's exciting about change", she told the BBC.

"The fans have lived through so many changes and this is only a new, different one - not a fearful one".

"I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman", Chibnall revealed in an official statement, "and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice".

With Whittaker boasting a noteworthy filmography - including Black Mirror, Attack the Block, and Chibnall's own series Broadchurch, the showrunner reassures that the actress will bring quite a lot to her portrayal as The Doctor.

"Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away".
