  • Emiratis 'planted fake news to trigger Qatar crisis'

But Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt all blocked Qatari media and later severed diplomatic ties.

Qatar accused the United Arab Emirates of a "shameful act of cyberterrorism" after reports that U.S. intelligence officials had evidence that it orchestrated a hack of Qatar's state news agency and planted the fake news that led to the worst diplomatic crisis in the region in years. Trump was in Riyadh on May 21, the report claims that UAE officials discussed the plan on May 23, and then the hacks took place on May 24.

It was unclear whether the UAE carried out the hacks itself or had contracted to have them done, the Post said.

While the statements attributed to Qatar's emir sparked the current crisis, Qatar has been at odds with the other conservative monarchies in the Gulf for many years. The Post did not identify the intelligence officials it spoke to for the report. Diplomatic efforts by Washington and Kuwait to broker a resolution have yielded little.

The report quotes unnamed USA intelligence officials as saying that senior members of the Emirati government discussed the plan on May 23.

If confirmed, a hack of QNA would be a striking example of a cyber attack shaping global politics. When did Trump and Tillerson learn about alleged UAE involvement in the hacks?

"We need a regional solution and global monitoring", said Anwar Gargash, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, in prepared remarks he was scheduled to deliver on Monday in London. "Inciting violence, encouraging radicalization, and undermining the stability of its neighbours", the statement said.

He said the four Arab powers were in the process of discussing additional sanctions on Qatar but did not elaborate, saying only that "there will be some tightening of the screws".

"We need a regional solution and worldwide monitoring", said Mr Gargash in prepared remarks he was set to deliver in London on Monday.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry told his Kuwaiti counterpart that the sanctions were being maintained "in light of what the quartet states see as Qatar's stalling and procrastination, and lack of concern for the concerns of the four states".

Doha rejected the demands, which included shutting down the broadcaster Al Jazeera, removing Turkish troops from Qatar's soil, scaling back cooperation with Iran and ending ties with Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood movement.
