  • Vinales Podium is minimum requirement at Dutch TT

The Yamaha rider crossed the finish line nearly side-by-side with second-placed Danilo Petrucci in one of the closest MotoGP finishes, with just 0.063 splitting the pair as Marc Marquez crossed the line third, five seconds behind the lead battle.

Valentino Rossi is loving every minute of an "unbelievable" MotoGP title race after a hard-earned win in Assen bunched up the pack.

Yamaha stars Maverick Vinales and Valentino Rossi will attempt to halt the sudden surge of Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso at the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday and bury the misery of Barcelona. But the then-series leader went down, giving Dovizioso clear track and the Italian was able to lap a second faster than the men in front.

Triple world champion Marc Marquez was third for Honda.

Rossi's Yamaha team-mate Maverick Vinales, who started the day with the championship lead, crashed out in the light drizzle at the Dutch circuit. Then Petrucci took second from Marquez and Rossi began to pull away, opening the lead to more than a second with nine laps to go.

And then? It started to rain - and the story evidently was far from over.

McPhee completed his astonishing comeback from 19th on the grid to lock out the podium and escape the chaos behind, with Martin taking fourth after slicing back through the lead group and Danilo scoring a career best finish in fifth ahead of Ramirez.

"It looks like the Yamaha riders especially in dry conditions, have a really good pace - Johann and also Vinales", said Marquez.

Vinales was a poor 10th in Spain, two back from Rossi. Alvaro Bautista will be leading the third row in 7 and he will be joined by Cal Crutchlow in 8 and last two races victor, Andrea Dovizioso, in 9Sam Lowes rounded out the top ten.

In the end, it was Marquez who grabbed the final podium spot by just 0.042s from Crutchlow, who in turn beat Dovizioso to the line by only 0.084s.

However, his lead has been trimmed to just seven points by Dovizioso after the Italian claimed back-to-back wins in Italy and at the Catalunya race last time out.

Zarco's tyre gamble didn't pay off, with the Frenchman then also handed a ride through for speeding in the pitlane and eventually classified in P14, leading the group the riders who went into pitlane to change bikes - Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team) was next to complete the points, ahead of Hector Barbera (Reale Avintia Racing) and Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar).

The MotoGP season will now move to Sachsenring, Germany for the last race before the summer break on July 2.
