What GOP Opposition To Senate Health Care Bill Means For Its Passage

23 Juin, 2017, 19:04 | Author: Claudine Rigal

Soon after Senate Republicans finally unveiled their secret health care bill Thursday, NBC News and the Wall Street Journal published a poll showing widespread disapproval for the House version of the bill, which passed last month and is largely the same as its Senate counterpart.

PEARSON: The protections around preexisting conditions are still in place in the Senate bill, but the waiver authority gives states options that could include limiting coverage for people with pre-existing conditions.

The Senate bill would also reduce subsidies now provided to help people without workplace coverage get private health insurance, said Caroline Pearson, a senior vice president of the health care consulting firm Avalare Health.

Under Obama's law, "many of those people would have gotten much more generous plans", she said. Jobs in the health care sector will be lost. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has stated that basing tax credits on age would increase out-of-pocket costs for many low-income Americans, according to the Associated Press.

The Senate bill would eliminate the individual and employer mandates, scale back some of Obamacare's tax credits, and cut off Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood for one year.

He ended the statement with a call to action, urging supporters of the Affordable Care Act to call their senators, visit their offices, and speak out.

Obama reacted to the Senate GOP's plan to repeal Obamacare in a post on his Facebook page late Thursday afternoon.

They can afford only two defections; in that case, Vice President Mike Pence would be brought in to break a 50-50 tie.

GOP Health Bill: Senate Leader Faces Battle for Support
It's no surprise that Obama came out against the bill, which would eviscerate his signature health care legislation. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., didn't mince words when she ripped into the bill on the Senate floor earlier Thursday.

Pressman starred for years - including April of this year - at Inner Circle , a charity show that pokes fun at politics. Pressman was one of the first television reporters in NY and worked at WNBC as a senior correspondent for decades.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., has already indicated that he will not support the bill in its current form because he said it doesn't go far enough to uproot the ACA, also known as Obamacare - the same reason many conservatives didn't support the GOP's American Health Care Act earlier this year.

Obama has largely kept out of the political fray since his departure from the White House - weighing in on just a handful of Donald Trump's actions through written statements, such as his successor's travel ban on refugees and several Muslim-majority countries, and the decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate accord.

That could include the number of years the bill would take to phase out the extra money Obama provided to expand the federal-state Medicaid program for the poor and disabled to millions of additional low earners.

The proposal, which is dubbed the "Better Care Reconciliation Act", would change how states fund their Medicaid programs by shifting to block grants or per capita caps on spending.

MCEVERS: In the Senate bill, the rollback of the Medicaid expansion is more gradual than what it is in the House bill. "President Obama envisioned a day when consumers could shop for health coverage 'the same way you'd shop for a plane ticket on Kayak or a TV on Amazon'".

"The way this bill cuts health care is heartless. Cuts to Medicaid will lead to more asthma attacks".

By 2024, the bill would end Obamacare's federal money to expand Medicaid, which has allowed 4 million Californians to get insured.

Little wonder premiums and deductibles would both rise on the individual market - more broken Trump promises.
