Was Trump 'Attacking the Mayor of London Because He Is Muslim?'

"The point is, there is a reason to be alarmed".

Khan's office responded to Trump's Sunday tweet by saying the mayor "has more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump's ill-informed tweet".

Civilians are led away from the London attacks on Saturday that left at least seven people dead.

Trump first tweeted over the weekend about Khan's comments to Londoners telling them there was "no need to be alarmed" by an increase in police presence in the streets. "No reason to be alarmed".

"Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his "no reason to be alarmed" statement", Trump wrote on Twitter this morning. The mayor had made clear that he was advising people not to be concerned by the presence of additional armed officers in the capital in the days to come, and not playing down anxieties about the London Bridge attack itself.

Media captionSadiq Khan: "This is our city, these are our values and this is our way of life".

Ms Dick said: "I have been a police officer for 34 years and I have been to many crime scenes, as you would imagine, and it is deeply, deeply chilling and horribly sad to see what we have just seen and to think about the barbarous acts of Saturday night".

As a Londoner, I am appalled by the suggestion that the recent attack be used to justify a travel ban in the U.S. It is extremely tasteless, to say the least, that Trump would use a disaster overseas in order to further his own political goals.

"You have to be kidding me?!: Terror attacks are part of living in big city, says London Mayor Sadiq Khan", he tweeted.

At an election campaign event in London, Mrs May said: "Cressida Dick has said that the Metropolitan Police are well resourced - and they are, she has said they have very powerful counter-terrorism capabilities - and they do".

His critics have accused him of being insensitive and twisting the mayor's words.

Lib Dem leader Tim Farron and Tottenham MP David Lammy are among the politicians to blast the president.

Asked if Trump was wrong to make the comments, British Prime Minister Theresa May said at a news conference Monday that "Sadiq Khan is doing a good job and it's wrong to say anything else - he's doing a good job". "It's a time for steady, determined leadership - like we are seeing from local authorities in London, including the mayor of London." she said, per CNN.

The Conference of Mayors, representing more than 1,400 US cities, also backed Khan with a statement Sunday.

"After acts of unspeakable cruelty & cowardice, the people of London & the United Kingdom choose resolve over fear".

President Donald Trump is criticizing his own Justice Department for asking the Supreme Court to review a "watered down, politically correct version" of the travel ban he signed in March. Trump later challenged Khan to an IQ test during an interview on ITV.

Khan, the first Muslim mayor of London, criticized Trump's views on Islam and for his immigration ban.

Trump has used the London attacks - in which three men plowed a van into pedestrians on the iconic London Bridge and went on a stabbing spree in a nearby market - to promote and call for support for his travel ban.
