The Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped 2.97 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,436.10.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was little changed at 21,207 on Monday. Paint maker Sherwin-Williams lost 0.9 percent. The Nasdaq Composite .ixic dropped 0.21 points, or -0 percent, to 6,305.58.

Small-company stocks fell more than the rest of the market.

Stocks are edging lower in midday trading as the market pulls back from its latest record highs set last week.
