The B-1B Lancers, with their four F-16 engines and an airborne range of 94-hundred kilometers, can reach the Korean peninsula in two hours from their base in Guam.

"Our air force plans to hold a joint drill with two B-1Bs in the sky of the Korean peninsula today", Lt. Col. Kim Sung-duk, a public relations officer, told reporters.

But a military official cautioned against over-interpretation of the Lancer dispatch, which he said is part of a scheduled South Korea-U.S. joint exercise.

The special advisor said last week in Washington that if Pyongyang stops any further nuclear and missile activities, the deployment of U.S. military strategic assets and the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises can be scaled down through discussions with the U.S. side.

The bombers would reportedly pass through the southern waters of South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju, before moving the East Waters of the Korean Peninsula and conducting the joint air drill with South Korean fighter jets.

The B-1B bombers are a key strategic asset to the U.S. forces operating in the Asia-Pacific region. A military source says the bombers took part in mock bombing practice near the two Koreas' eastern border before heading back.

It was the second time in about a month that the United States has deployed the Lancers to the divided peninsula this year as North Korea has conducted numerous missile tests despite global condemnation and punishing economic sanctions.

Pocheon is located near the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea.

Two U.S. supersonic bombers flew over the Korean Peninsula while a guided-missile destroyer visited a southern island Tuesday in the latest shows of force against a defiant North Korea.
