Tropical Storm Cindy Makes Landfall

23 Juin, 2017, 09:12 | Author: Come Portier

These storms will be scattered, so not everyone will see rain, but those that do can anticipate heavy rain and lightning.

Already blamed for one death in Alabama, Cindy was expected to keep churning seas and spin off bands of severe weather from eastern Texas to northwestern Florida.

Heavy rain was forecast to spread over the Tennessee and OH valleys on Thursday, then move Friday and Saturday into the central Appalachians. The dugout of a baseball field is destroyed in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, as severe weather from Tropical Storm Cindy brushed along the northwest coast of Florida Wednesday mo.

Forecasters are warning of life-threatening flash floods and severe thunderstorms as the eye of Storm Cindy moves further inland across Louisiana.

Dustin Harrell, Extension rice specialist, LSU AgCenter, said much of the south Louisiana crop was planted on or around Valentine's Day this year, a historically early date for planting rice, even in the southern part of the state.

There were widespread reports of street and road flooding along the Gulf Coast as far east as Florida, where the National Park Service reported the bridge closed between Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach.

As of now, the main impacts to Southwest Louisiana will be the heavy rain threat that could lead to flash flooding Wednesday through Friday, and the secondary threat will be the gusty winds associated with the land falling storm Wednesday night through Thursday morning.

Rainfall amounts of 1 to 4 inches are expected to begin and expand across parts of the Tennessee and OH valleys.

John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency for Louisiana as a result of Tropical Storm Cindy.

A National Weather Service meteorologist says a suspected tornado has damaged several businesses in an outlying suburb of Birmingham, Alabama.

"Now if we get wind and it knocks the corn down, well, I don't want that".

Pay close attention to the weather conditions today, and listen for flash flood and tornado warnings.

The Gulf Coast is popular with cruise ships, and Tropical Storm Cindy along with the remnants of Tropical Storm Bret have caused Carnival Cruise Line to redirect three of its ships to avoid rough seas, according to the Miami Herald. He also activated four Texas Task Force 1 boat squads and two Texas Military Department vehicles squads of five vehicles each to respond to any weather-related emergencies.

"One of our safety concerns is alligators", said local neighborhood watch organizer Erin West. They also expected flooding of the same level "elsewhere along the coast from southeastern Louisiana to the western Florida Panhandle in areas of strong onshore winds". There were numerous reports of waterspouts and short-lived tornadoes spawned by the storm.

This could contribute to locally heavy rain and flooding in parts of the lower Mississippi Valley, Tennessee Valley, Ohio Valley and possibly the Appalachians. Wind gusts of 40 to 60 miles per hour are possible.

Official landfall was made just before 4 a.m.at the Texas-Louisiana border.
