Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie getting Order of Canada

Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie is among 29 people being honoured today by the Governor General today for their work in raising awareness of indigenous issues.

Downie, who announced past year that he had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, has become a strong advocate for Indigenous people.

Tragically Hip members Rob Baker, Johnny Fay, Paul Langlois and Gord Sinclair, were invested with Downie as Members of the Order of Canada for their contribution to Canadian music and for their support of social and environmental causes.

Downie's recent solo album and graphic novel Secret Path tells the story of an Ojibwe First Nations boy, Chanie Wenjack, who died in 1966 while trying to escape a residential school.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was among the dignitaries in attendance at the ceremony.

Downie was among 30 people who received the Order of Canada, the Meritorious Service Decorations (Civil Division), the Polar Medal or the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers for their leadership in supporting Indigenous issues.
