Top three miss cut at US Open, leaving four-way tie for lead

The low-scoring sets up a wide open final Sunday, with the world's top three ranked players - No.1 Dustin Johnson, No.2 Rory McIlroy and No.3 Jason Day - all missing the cut on Friday.

ERIN, Wisconsin After grabbing a share of the early second round lead at the U.S. Open, Paul Casey crashed down the leaderboard with a triple bogey as the Erin Hills layout showed its teeth on Friday. "I guess it's rare you get through a U.S. Open or any major without some kind of hiccup".

None of the leading 16 players have won a major before, making it likely that a run of six consecutive victories by first-timers will extend to seven this weekend.

But that's not all that makes the possibilities so limitless Saturday.

In all, 32 players are within five shots of the lead.

The 2011 champion McIlroy shot a second round 71 but his horror opening score of five-over on day one means his uncertain season continues as he missed the one-over cut line; the joint-highest in US Open history.

Having five players reach 10-under in a single U.S. Open is rather remarkable considering just six had ever done it in the previous 116 Opens.

"If you look at this golf course and you talk to me, Jason or Rory, this golf course sets up flawless for us", Johnson said.

Casey was the only leader who went in the morning.

"I saw some positives there on the back nine coming in and hopefully I can take them to the Travelers (tournament) next week", he said.

"It's pretty frustrating when I got here Friday, put a lot of work in - not a lot, but I tried to pace myself", said Day.

However, plenty of others were firmly in contention at the start of the penultimate day; only eight shots separated the leaders from those who made the cut on the bubble. "And I've been very light on competitive rounds this year, and it's just a matter of getting into a good round of golf now".

Charl Schwarzel, who was one under after the first round, faltered in the second with a 76 to fail to make the cut, as did George Coetzee, who followed up his even par first round with a seven-over 79, a total matched by Oliver Bekker. After pars at three and four, he birdied three of the next five to get to 9-under for the tournament to take a brief lead before bogeying the 10th.

The big-hitting American started strong with back-to-back birdies but missed putts late on to cost him the chance of becoming the first player to defend his US Open title since Curtis Strange in 1989.

"Not every day you enjoy a round of golf with an 8 on the card, but I'm a pretty happy man", Casey said.

"But I think with how long the course is and how long the days are, I won't worry". I missed another one on four from about three feet, but I didn't feel like I was hitting bad putts, I was just misreading them.

"If we get rain tomorrow and it gets wet and it plays soft, this place is going to get soft and you're going to have to be aggressive and you have to make a ton of birdies", Snedeker said.

"Even though it's very disappointing to not be here on the weekend, I think these last two rounds will serve me well going into the summer, " he said.

"I have pictured winning the US Open a lot of times before".

"It was a good bogey", Fleetwood said.
