Nick Timothy, l'un des principaux conseillers de la Première ministre britannique Theresa May, a publié samedi sur le site ConservativeHome une lettre dans laquelle il annonce sa démission.

D'après plusieurs médias britanniques, des poids lourds du parti ont même exigé leur départ à Theresa May si elle voulait éviter une rébellion ouverte.

Responsables d'une campagne qualifiée de "catastrophique" par plusieurs députés conservateurs, Nick Timothy et Fiona Hill se trouvaient dans une position intenable.

En convoquant des élections anticipées, Theresa May a perdu son pari et sa majorité absolue à la Chambre des Communes.

La cheffe du gouvernement a refusé vendredi de démissionner elle-même, déclarant qu'elle allait former un nouveau gouvernement avec l'appui du parti nord-irlandais DUP qui "mènera à bien la sortie de l'Union européenne". Les poids lourds de son gouvernement ont d'ores et déjà été confirmés: Philip Hammond aux Finances, Boris Johnson aux Affaires étrangères, David Davis pour le Brexit, Amber Rudd à l'Intérieur et Michael Fallon à la Défense.

Parallèlement, Downing Street a annoncé samedi soir que Mme May était parvenue à un "accord sur des grandes lignes" avec le parti unioniste nord-irlandais du DUP, dont elle a désormais cruellement besoin.

Dans une séquence symbolisant le chaos politique dans lequel est plongé le Royaume-Uni depuis jeudi, Downing Street a d'abord annoncé samedi qu'un accord de principe avait été trouvé avec le DUP, petit parti protestant ultra-conservateur devenu indispensable aux conservateurs pour avoir une majorité au Parlement. "Mais je ne la vois pas durer plus de six mois", pronostique-t-elle.

La dépendance vis-à-vis du DUP pose également la question de la neutralité du gouvernement britannique en Irlande du Nord, une région toujours soumise à de fortes tensions, vingt ans après la fin des "Troubles".

Mais c'est surtout le positionnement politique de ces protestants radicaux, opposés à l'avortement (illégal dans la province) et au mariage des homosexuels, volontiers créationnistes, historiquement liés à des organisations paramilitaires, qui fait lever des sourcils à Londres et ailleurs.

"Discréditée, humiliée, diminuée. Theresa May a perdu sa crédibilité et son influence dans son parti, dans son pays et en Europe", tranche dimanche l'hebdomadaire The Observer.
