'The Mummy' is buried at box office by 'Wonder Woman'

Tom Cruise's "The Mummy" was buried at the USA box office this weekend by 'Wonder Woman, ' but looked more alive overseas thanks to a strong start in China. The Tom Cruise-starringreboot seemingly unravelled domestically, managing just $32.2 million in its opening weekend - lower than any of the four Mummy films in the most recent franchise. While positions may be switched worldwide, Wonder Woman is still the crème de la crème of the box office for a second week in a row stateside.

Underpants, which tells the story of two students who hypnotize a school principal to believe he is a superhero, took in US$12.3 million for the weekend.

The North American opening for The Mummy had a weak start and its domestic revenue didn't cover the production costs.

On the surface, the pitiful U.S. gross for "The Mummy" looks like the worst possible scenario for Universal in launching a franchise to go up against Marvel Studios and DC Films.

The Mummy fared better overseas, however, where the film was No. 1 with $141.8 million from 63 territories. Following far behind was Universal Pictures' reboot of The Mummy franchise starring Tom Cruise.

Cruise is now filming Mission: Impossible 6 with Christopher McQuarrie, who also nabbed a writing credit onThe Mummy.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2", $6.2 million ($2.2 million international).

Death toll in Portugal forest fires rises to 62
Resident Isabel Brandao told The Associated Press that she had feared for her life when she saw the blaze. Gomes said that 14 civilians had been injured, 10 of them seriously, along with six firefighters.

The other two debuts, It Comes At Night and Meagan Leavey, struggled to attract an audience.

Indeed, the midweek numbers ($11.8 million for Monday, $14.3 million for Tuesday and $9.3 million for Wednesday) suggest that all the critical acclaim for the Patty Jenkins-directed smash is driving consistent crowds even after the opening-weekend rush.

Playing some 105,000 screenings per day from Friday to Sunday, the gross total accounted for more than half of the total box office.

"It Comes at Night", $6 million. It would end the weekend with an estimated $142 million overseas.

Everything, Everything (US$1.6 million). Spin-off The Scorpion King also opened higher, earning $36 million.

"Beauty and the Beast", $2.9 million.

"Baywatch", $4.6 million ($10.7 million international). After 17 days, "Pirates" has managed $162 million.
