Tesla cleared of responsibility for fatal crash

The NTSB on Monday released hundreds of pages of technical reports on the 7 May 2016, accident. They say that "analysis, findings, recommendations, and probable cause determinations related to the crash will be issued by the Board at a later date".

The man who was killed previous year in the much publicized Tesla Model S Autopilot crash had been visually warned 7 separate times (including 6 auditory warnings) during the trip about not having his hands on the wheel, according to a new 500 page report from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The reports offered new details of the violent accident, but stopped short of clarifying why the driver didn't attempt to override the car's autonomous systems.

Tesla is firm with its statement since a year ago that the company's auto is autopilot and it does not equal to an autonomous vehicle.

In January, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it had found no evidence of defects in the aftermath of Brown's death.

System performance data downloaded from the Tesla revealed that the driver was operating the auto using automated vehicle control systems: Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer lane keeping systems. Though in 2016 the company said Autopilot "does not allow the driver to abdicate responsibility".

The NHTSA earlier this year found that the owner of the Tesla Model S sedan had ignored the manufacturer's warnings to maintain control even while using the driver-assist function.

The NTSB makes safety recommendations but can not order recalls.

Last year, Joshua Brown was on board his Tesla Model S crossing the highway in Williston, Florida when the vehicle, set to 74 miles per hour in driver-assist mode, broadsided a truck. The impact killed the Tesla driver, Joshua Brown, who had set the vehicle to a speed of 74 miles an hour in a zone limited to 65 miles per hour. According to an examination of the car's electronic data, there was no sign of the victim stomping the brake before the impact happened.

Brown, 40 and a former Navy SEAL, had been cited for speeding eight times between 2010 and 2015, according to OH records cited by the NTSB.

The driver of the truck had had his license suspended five times between 1984 and 2013 for violations including speeding and failure to appear in court, according to NTSB.

The safety board's next step is to issue a report on the cause of the accident and any recommendations for preventing a re-occurrence.
