Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain severed their ties with Qatar on Monday, accusing it of supporting terrorism.

Air, land and sea links have been halted to the country from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain.

Qatar, home to the Al-Jazeera news network, also plays a role in negotiating with groups that many governments keep distance from.

The diplomatic bust-up threatens the global prestige of Qatar, which has a large USA military base and is set to host the 2022 soccer World Cup. However, the 2014 crisis did not see a land and sea blockade as threatened now.

It was not clear if the decision would affect American military operations.
