Qatar hits out at neighbours as Arab rift enters third week

But Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard has accused Saudi Arabia of involvement in the attacks.

Even if they are not partaking in the boycott, the majority of the region's countries agree that Qatar's regime has crossed all red lines, causing grave destruction, threatening the region's entire security and aiding terrorist groups and hostile countries like Iran. Qatar dismissed the allegations as "baseless" and "slanderous".

On Wednesday, two U.S. navy vessels arrived in Doha to take part in a joint military exercise with the Qatari emiri navy. In their apparent bid to secure United States support and that of Israel, they further suspended all land, air and sea traffic with Qatar, expelled its diplomats and ordered Qatari citizens to leave their countries. Saudi-US nexus against Iran is a serious matter as both countries are focusing on further isolating Tehran on unsubstantiated charges of sponsoring terrorism. Qatar, unlike Iraq, which in August 1990 had occupied Kuwait, is not involved in any aggression and can not be punished by imposing sanctions on dubious charges of sponsoring terrorism and terrorist groups in the Middle East.

But experts fear that, due to its pro-Qatar stance, Turkey's latest diplomatic efforts could yield only limited results in ending the crisis and bringing the situation back to normal.

"It didn't take Ankara long to reach the conclusion that, after Qatar, Turkey is the likely next target", Fehim Tastekin wrote in Al-Monitor.

The dramatic move comes after years of tension between Qatar and its Gulf neighbours, in particular Saudi Arabia, which has closed its border, severing land, sea and air contact with the tiny peninsula.

Turkey's open support to Qatar is a choice based on its economic and strategic considerations.

Ties between Saudi Arabia and Turkey had become strained under King Salman's predecessor over Turkey's support for the Muslim Brotherhood during the height of Arab Spring protests.

Qatar's economy flourished, buoyed by liquefied natural gas markets in Asia, expanding from $8.1 billion in 1995 to $210 billion in 2014. Since then Turkish and Qatari leaders have conducted regular meetings.

Since the Qatari crisis started, Turkey has openly voiced support to Qatar, one of its major trade partners and a main source of investment, while criticizing the Saudi-led blockade on Doha as inhumane.

There are a number of converging interests between Turkey and Qatar, he says.

"It is impossible to turn this into a struggle resembling the struggle for Palestine", Cakir said. I know those foundations.

Al-Abadi has said that his government will not take sides in the dispute.

"We have no news concerning one of the boats", he said. Today, the Saudis work closely in the shadows with Israel to fight against Iran and the Islamic State. It will eventually shut down most rabble-rousing media outlets it created when evading commitments it made under the Riyadh Agreement.
