  • Points to Know As Georgia House Race Heads to Voters

Ossoff is running in a special election against the Republican candidate Karen Handel to replace Tom Price, who is now the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Trump, 70, took to Twitter Monday to encourage voters to elect Handel in the race for the Georgia 6th Congressional District.

There was no mention of Donald Trump laced into Democrat Jon Ossoff's election-eve pep rally.

Seats like this in metro Atlanta that have formed the backbone of GOP power for decades but where Trump is only marginally popular and struggled against Democrat Hillary Clinton a year ago, will determine the fate of the House majority in 2018. Republicans are favored to hold a fourth seat up Tuesday in SC, while Democrats already held their lone open seat in a California special election. The district traditionally goes Republican, but most consider the race too close to call as voters head to the polls on Tuesday.

The campaign's emphasis on the ground game illustrates how important turnout will be for Ossoff in a GOP-leaning district. What they tend to have in common: Relatively highly educated, wealthy and diverse populations, plus people who - like thousands in Ossoff's district - voted for Mitt Romney in 2012 and then backed Hillary Clinton in 2016.

The president said: "KAREN HANDEL FOR CONGRESS". While Trump won the district by only 1 percent in November, Georgia's 6th congressional district usually favors Republicans. He has said the address is close to Emory University, where his fiancee attends medical school.

Trump also recorded a robocall for Handel earlier this month.

Handel's decision to keep her distance from Trump risks alienating Trump's supporters, a part of the GOP base that she still needs. "He clearly was a handpicked candidate by (House Minority Leader) Nancy Pelosi".

Ossoff, who once described his bid to take the GOP-controlled district as an opportunity to "make Trump furious", has since dialed back.

After Scalise's shooting, the tensions in the race ratcheted up even more.

"There are many in this community, myself among them, who have deep concerns about the direction of things in Washington, about the integrity and competence of this administration", he said. The 70-year-old retiree said she has volunteered for Ossoff since March, motivated by her fears about Trump's election and his approach to health care, immigration and education.

Republican retiree Miriam Asper told CNN that she feels that Handel's views reflect her own. "I needed to do something to change it".

"And, yeah, it should come down", she said. Outside money from Super PACs and the National Republican Congressional Committee total at about $18.2 million in support of Handel, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Handel told reporters Monday that she hadn't seen the ad.

Principled PAC, the organization that produced the ad, had not disclosed its donors before this weekend, when the group unveiled the spot.

A flash of political violence meanwhile has cast a shadow over the Georgia race: the shooting of a top Republican congressman last Wednesday. Ossoff criticized the ad for politicizing "a tragedy that has united the country".
