One Manchester Benefit Raises $3 Million, Draws Massive Audience

  • Ariana Grande has taken to the stage at the One Love Manchester benefit concert

According to overnight viewing figures from overnights.tv, the final three minutes of the concert attracted an audience of 22.6 million viewers on BBC One - making it the most-watched TV event of 2017 to date.

Sunday's three-hour event, broadcast and live-streamed for an audience of millions on television and the Internet, was a moving expression of resilience - by both the performers and the crowd in Manchester, members of which could be seen enjoying themselves in handsome reaction shots filled with wide grins, hoisted drinks and children seated on their parents' shoulders.

Yet One Love Manchester - which brought artists including Coldplay, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Liam Gallagher, Pharrell Williams and Justin Bieber to the Old Trafford cricket stadium - had to do something else too, and that was to demonstrate that pop music's spirit of openness and optimism hadn't been quelled by the earlier assault. Various streams were also shown on Twitter and Facebook.

The event was organised by Ariana Grande, whose concert in the city on May 22 was targeted by a suicide bomber. All net proceeds will go to the victims and families who were affected by the attack. The attack, which happened after a concert by Ariana Grande, left 22 people dead and more than 50 injured.

Grande also returned to Manchester to visit victims at the hospital. Grande, her voice exhausted from the long evening, paused with tears in her eyes before the song's coda as the crowd, made up of people the same age as those who attended her concert in the area less than two weeks earlier, watched on - no doubt exhausted, but no less passionate for it.

During the almost three-hour concert, Grande was joined by a school choir onstage to sing her own hit, "My Everything".

Fans have questioned Usher's whereabouts after he failed to appear at One Love Manchester on Sunday (04Jun17).

The total of viewers for the concert is not yet known since it aired on many platforms across the world.

The UK broadcast industry pulled together in less than a week to provide live coverage of the One Love Manchester gig last night.
