A driver plowed into a crowd of Muslim worshippers outside a north London mosque early Monday in an attack that police said they were investigating as a terrorist incident.

Police said a suspect was quickly and calmly turned over to the police, and that no one else was found in the van. "Immediately after the incident, people were praying for the victims of the attack".

British Prime Minister Theresa May said the incident was being treated at "a potential terrorist attack". "The other was held at the scene until the police came". There was a man in a wheelchair, a man underneath the van, it was hell. Officials deployed armed officers at the scene, and several hours later, counter-terrorism police were brought in and are reportedly leading the investigation.

- Muslim Council of Britain releases a statement calling it a "terror attack".

AFP reporters saw a helicopter hovering overhead and several emergency vehicles blocking a section of Seven Sisters Road, a busy thoroughfare. They took him away.

"The man tried to escape". And then the guy came out of his van and I got him.

Harun Khan, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain condemned the attack describing it as a "violent manifestation" of Islamophobia.

"All my thoughts are with the victims, their families and the emergency services on the scene", May said, adding that she would chair an emergency response meeting later on Monday.

One man died at the scene and 10 people were injured.

"Some big van. crushing the people in the mosque".

A witness who lives opposite the scene of the incident told the BBC a white van stopped near the Finsbury Park Mosque, as Muslims celebrated Ramadan in the multiethnic area. "There was three people in the van".

"There has been one person arrested". Around 10% of the borough's population is Muslim.

Britain's terrorism threat level now remains at severe.

On May 22, a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a pop concert in Manchester, killing 22 people.

As the bystanders who tackled the driver held him down and waited for the authorities to arrive, one said, the man had urged them to kill him.

Earlier, he tweeted: "I'm totally shocked at the incident at Finsbury Park tonight".

"London is a city of many faiths and many nationalities. And that reputation may be more historical than current", he said.

"In light of last night's attack, that protection has been strengthened and increased".

Cllr Steve Mackay, the Mayor of Worcester, said: "I am extremely saddened by the events which have occurred close to the mosque in Finsbury Park". The mosque, which today operates largely as a community center, rose to global notoriety in the early 2000s, due to its links with Egyptian-born radical cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri. "We must and will stand united against those who seek to divide us".
