This announcement came after Grier had served his one year of ineligibility due to transferring from the University of Florida.

Grier was suspended halfway through the 2015 season after a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs while he was a freshman at Florida. He transferred to WVU after the season, then sat out the 2016 season under NCAA transfer rules. Florida lost to LSU the week after Grier was suspended, and ended the year with three consecutive losses to Florida State, Alabama in the SEC championship game and MI in the Citrus Bowl. Grier claimed he was unaware the supplement contained a disallowed ingredient, but felt uneasy about remaining in Gainesville with the ban hanging over him. According to ESPN, WVU pursued a NCAA waiver for Grier to be eligible for the opener instead of sitting until Game 7. He played well in West Virginia's spring game, completing 12 of his 18 passes for 202 yards.

But now Grier has been given the green light to play the entire season for the Mountaineers, who open September 3 against Virginia Tech at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland. He completed 106 of 161 passes for 1,204 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions before his suspension.
