May seen fighting for survival after election failure

  • May seen fighting for survival after election failure

It may well be able to form a minority government with the help of Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party in the coming days and weeks, but the prime minister's ability to cling to the keys of Number 10 Downing Street is very much in doubt, and her stated goal of unifying the country behind her ahead of the upcoming Brexit negotiations with European Union leaders is utterly out of reach.

Class and education may not be the deciding factors in the most recent UK General elections, that pitted the young against the old.

That's odd, because surely one of the most noteworthy aspects of the election was the surprisingly strong showing of the Labour Party under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn.

SIEGEL: The Conservatives evidently plan to govern with the Democratic Unionists, the dominant Protestant party in Northern Ireland providing the few votes in the House of Commons that they'll need to have a working majority.

It was not immediately clear what the DUP's demands might be and one DUP lawmaker suggested support might come vote by vote.

Chancellor Philip Hammond, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, Home Secretary Amber Rudd, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon and Brexit Secretary David Davis have all been kept on in their roles.

European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker said he hoped there would not be "further delay" in the Brexit talks that "we are desperately waiting for". "The question now is Theresa May's future obviously, it looks like rejection of a hard Brexit".

"We must in my view seek to deliver an open Brexit, not a closed one, which puts our country's economic growth first", Davidson said. But it is likely to mean that Britain will now seek a softer exit taking back government powers from the European Union while still trying to retain access to the single market.

Tusk spelt out the problem on Twitter: "We don't know when Brexit talks start". We know when they must end. "Do your best to avoid a "no deal" as result of 'no negotiations'". They could have asked for a second general election. She had a majority in Parliament.

Ryssdal: Who, though, Stephen - and yes, May's job is at risk here - but who wants this job now?

May, however, insisted her party was still in pole position to lead, despite falling short by eight seats, CNN reports. To be clear, the Labour party does not currently possess a majority itself ― it still trails the Tories by 57 seats as of this writing ― but the Tories have now dipped below the 50 percent threshold, making for a hung parliament, and for huge pressure on May to resign. "And I don't feel like the current prime minister or, indeed, the Tory party, has any idea about what to do with Brexit at the moment".

Former Conservative minister Anna Soubry added that the premier "is in a very hard place. she now has to obviously consider her position".

"Mayhem" screamed the headline on the front page of The Sun, Britain's biggest selling newspaper that is normally sympathetic to the Conservatives. But after meeting with the queen, Theresa May insisted she will carry on.

With 649 of 650 seats declared, the Conservatives had won 318 seats and Labour 261 followed by pro-independence Scottish National Party on 34.

May failed to get the 326 seats her Conservative party needs for an outright majority. And the relationship between the Conservatives and its minority government partner, the Democratic Unionist Party, also remains unclear.

British voters just sent a strong signal that they are increasingly tired of xenophobic rhetoric and public policies based on the principle of economic austerity.

It is too early to know whether the nationalist populism stoked by a resurgent Russian Federation has peaked in the West, but if the recent elections in France and Britain are any guide, the isolationists who threw their lot in with the Trump administration and "America First" may soon face equally catastrophic losses.
