Let's decode President Trump's odd tweet confirming he's under investigation

Mueller is investigating Russian interference in US elections and possible Russian ties to the Trump campaign.

Former FBI chief James Comey's testimony has clearly stated that Trump tried to stop the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. And he seemed to accuse Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, of leading a "witch hunt".

This week, Trump also attacked what he called a "phony story" in the Washington Post that said Mueller's investigation had been expanded to include an inquiry into whether Trump's firing of Comey amounted to an illegal attempt to obstruct justice. Comey testified that Trump directed him in February to drop an FBI investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn relating to the Russian Federation matter. "Witch Hunt", the president tweeted.

Trump's tweet comes less than a day after a odd statement from a senior official in his administration.

But the people briefed on the president's thinking said Trump also knows that firing Rosenstein would be politically risky.

The president tweeted Friday, "After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my 'collusion with the Russians, ' nobody has been able to show any proof". Now, however, his obsessive attacks take on legal meaning - perhaps instances of obstruction of justice in and of themselves, or, at the very least, powerful evidence that Trump would have tried just about anything to throw the Federal Bureau of Investigation off the trail.

Mueller broadened the probe with the President now under investigation for obstruction of justice in probe regarding possible collusion by his campaign with the Kremlin.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is also investigating the ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, said she was "increasingly concerned" Trump would try to fire not only Mueller, but also the man who appointed him, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

The transition order came the same day that Vice President Mike Pence's confirmed that he had hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe.

Mr Trump was criticised for the tweet by the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Dianne Feinstein. That is why investigators want to know more about a meeting between Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and executives of Vnesheconombank, a Russian state-owned development bank now under USA sanctions.

Friday morning, Trump tweeted that indicated he might be under investigation. What is unclear from the disclosure is whether Trump added to his debt in any significant way to help pay for his presidential campaign. We don't know the answer to those questions yet.

If Mueller is investigating Trump's firing of Comey as possible obstruction of justice, he might want to learn about Trump's interactions with Rosenstein, the Justice Department official who wrote the memo criticizing Comey's performance before his firing. Rosenstein himself wrote the memorandum on which Trump ostensibly made that decision, calling for Comey's dismissal based on his handling of the Clinton email server scandal.
