Kovind resigns as Bihar governor, West Bengal governor Tripathi to replace him

Ram Nath Kovind, who was nominated as NDA's presidential candidate on Monday, has resigned as the Governor of Bihar.

"After discussing with senior party leaders, BJD has made a decision to support the candidature of Ram Nath Kovind", Patnaik told reporters after receiving a telephone call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As the Governor of Bihar, Kovind proved himself to be unbiased as well.

The election for the next President of India is to be held on July 17 as President Pranab Mukherjee will demit the office on July 24.

NewsX was the first channel to break the news that Ram Nath Kovind is NDA's presidential candidate.

Kovind said he was a "small citizen" entrusted with a big responsibility.

"With his illustrious background in the legal arena, Kovind's knowledge and understanding of the Constitution will benefit the nation".

UK, EU's historic Brexit talks commence

The video above shows Kovind addressing students, during a seminar on BR Ambedkar, on the subject of women not having the right to ancestral property in India.

A sulking Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray disapproved of caste being the basis for Presidency. But putting all those rumours to rest, the parliamentary board meeting, headed by Prime Minister Modi, stamped its approval on someone who not many may know about but has risen through the party's rank and also headed BJP's Dalit Morcha from 1998 to 2002.

BSP chief Mayawati, a Dalit leader herself, said Kovind can not be opposed unless the opposition fielded a popular Dalit nominee.

"The opposition will meet on June 22, only after that can we announce our decision", the West Bengal chief minister said.

The opposition parties are now in a quandary as they find nothing to oppose the nomination of Kovind, a Dalit leader, except his being a member of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh), an organisation that all opposition parties consider anti-secular. "I dont want to comment on the merits and demerits of the candidate". He, however, said a detailed discussion would be held on the matter within the JD (U). The Centre apprised the senior leaders, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh about the announcement over phone after taking the decision. We are against it, but we will have to discuss the issue within the CPI and with other opposition parties.

The 71-year-old low profile Dalit leader, a two-term BJP Rajya Sabha member, is seen as an astute choice by the saffron party, which has been targeted by opposition parties over Dalit issues, and his election is nearly a certainty as the ruling bloc with the support of some regional parties enjoys a majority in the electoral college.
