  • King Donald has made a martyr of Comey

It wasn't clear whether the president was basing his tweet on direct knowledge that he is under investigation, or on reports this week that special counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether the president obstructed justice by firing former FBI director James Comey last month amid the ongoing Russian Federation investigation.

Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., right, chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and Vice Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., left, listen as Attorney General Jeff Sessions testifies before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence about his role in the firing of FBI Director James Comey and the investigation into contacts between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, June 13, 2017.

In the wake of those news reports, Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to conduct the broad investigation into Russia's alleged meddling in last year's presidential campaign and alleged collusion with Trump associates.

President Donald Trump continued to fume this week over the continued attention paid to the Russian Federation probes, especially following a report that he's now under investigation for potential obstruction of justice.

Mueller, a former FBI director who was named special counsel for the Russian Federation investigation after Comey was sacked, is investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Kremlin officials in a bid to tilt the 2016 election in his favour.

Comey told a Senate panel last week he believed Trump had directed him to drop an agency investigation into Flynn. I didn't see any interaction between Trump and Rosenstein.

In the recent meeting with Brand, Rosenstein told her that if he were to recuse himself, she would have to step in and take over those responsibilities.

If Trump and other senior White House officials have concerns about Rosenstein's credibility, they certainly didn't voice it in the past.

Rosenstein has been overseeing the Russian Federation probe since shortly after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself.

This week, a friend of Trump's said the President was considering firing Mueller - a task that would be complicated by justice department regulations, which say that only the attorney-general may fire a special counsel and only if there is good cause. The President blames Rosenstein for appointing Mueller in the first place, and he faults Sessions for his earlier recusal from Russia-related issues. "That also means, however, that once the investigation is concluded or the special counsel has moved on, the justification for withholding would evaporate and the memos should be released". He's increasingly focused his anger at both Rosenstein and Mueller, according to advisers and confidants, viewing the two as part of a biased effort to undermine his presidency. In March, Sessions recused himself from decision-making in the investigation.

Mr Trump was not under investigation before Mr Comey's firing, but reportedly is now facing scrutiny for obstruction of justice over the circumstances surrounding the ex-FBI chief's sacking, according to USA media. An official of Trump's transition confirmed the lawyer's internal order, which was sent Thursday.

If Rosenstein recuses himself from oversight of the special counsel investigation, that role would fall to the Justice Department's No. 3 official, newly confirmed Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand.

Thursday, Trump griped he was receiving unfair treatment from investigators compared with his election opponent, Hillary Clinton. Pence headed the Trump transition until inauguration day.
