Relatives say they were told the 22-year-old University of Virginia student had been in a coma since shortly after he was sentenced to prison in North Korea in March 2016.

A series of atomic tests and missile launches since a year ago have ratcheted up tensions on the Korean peninsula, and Warmbier's death has further strained relations between Pyongyang and Washington. Warmbier was to be buried at a Cincinnati cemetery. Three Americans also remain in custody in the North.

Ohio's Republican senator calls Otto Warmbier "an unbelievable young man" who shouldn't have been detained. But he was arrested in Pyongyang in January 2016 and, as we have reported, was accused of trying to steal a propaganda poster. The statement also said it is necessary to upgrade military-to-military exchanges and establish mechanisms of notification in order to avoid the risks of "judgement errors" between the Chinese and U.S. militaries.

Doctors who examined Warmbier upon his arrival in the USA described his condition as a state of "unresponsive wakefulness", and indicated he suffered a "severe neurological injury" of unknown cause. "He did things because he wanted to do them".

"The fact that Warmbier died suddenly in less than a week just after his return to the US.is a mystery to us as well", KCNA quoted the spokesman as saying. Officials at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was treated after his return from the North, declined to provide details, and his family asked the Hamilton County Coroner on Tuesday not to perform an autopsy.

Warmbier's father called him a fighter, and some of his friends believe that the core of his spirit held on, until he felt it was safe to let go.

The editorial said the US government was caught in a crisis that might result in "the impeachment of Trump", and it alleged without evidence that Trump is getting ready to assault North Korea to help district from the "tough situation" he faces in his own country.
