Fowler back in the thick of it at US Open

Four years after Justin Rose ended a 43-year wait for an English victor, Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood headed into the third round of the US Open at Erin Hills in a four-way tie for the lead.

The 39-year-old was only able to move his fourth shot a matter of inches in heavy rough over the back of the green on the par five, before hacking out sideways and taking three putts from just off the green.

This is the first time in major championship history that the top-three ranked players have failed to make the cut.

"I wish I was about 5 shots better", Stricker said Friday at Erin Hills Golf Club. "But when you're visually looking down the fairway, I think when you're trying to aim at a target at a normal golf course, with normal width fairways, there's some pressure into hitting the fairway because it is a lot narrower than we have out here".

Justin Thomas landed a 3-wood on the 18th green where some players couldn't land a wedge, leaving him an 8-foot eagle putt that he calmly made for a 9-under 63 that matched one U.S. Open record and broke another.

South Korea's Kim Si-Woo and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama were among five players on five under, which also included amateur Cameron Champ.

"I was sticking to the same game plan, I was doing the same things", Hadwin said.

"There were a couple of loose swings out there, but when you shoot 65, you can take those", he said.

Rickie Fowler was playing so cleanly at Erin Hills that the record appeared to be in jeopardy. The top 18 players on the leaderboard going into the weekend have combined for zero majors.

Thomas shoots 63; breaks US Open record
He was at 7-under 137, two shots clear of anyone else who played early in warm sunshine on a course that getting dry and crispy. Day has been dealing with his mother's significant health issues for months, though he had been playing well lately.

It's a nice comeback for Casey after he triple bogeyed the par-5 14th and shot 38 on the back nine.

Brooks Koepka made three birdies over his last seven holes for a 68 and joined Thomas one shot out of the lead.

"Not every day you enjoy a round of golf with an eight on the card, but I'm a pretty happy man", Casey said. "Yeah, it was a bit of a roller coaster".

But while Casey was relieved after his gutsy fightback, it was back at the drawing board for McIlroy and Day after their disappointing exits. He picked up one shot on his first nine after an opening-round 79 but a double bogey on the fifth and a second-round 75 have him 10-over for the tournament.

"I felt the most calm I have in a major in a long time this week", said Day, who arrived last Friday.

Johnson was playing alongside Jordan Spieth, who was also two under for the day after five and one under overall.

Rory McIlroy's 71 wasn't enough and he'll miss the cut at five-over.

Rory McIlroy's pre-tournament comments looked set to prove disappointingly accurate as he battled to avoid missing the cut for the second year running in the US Open.

"I put it in the wrong places, ' he said". He was holding his own until the fescue ate him up on 15, then on 17, when he hit into the tall grass on the side of a steep hill and had to hit the next shot with the ball so far above his feet, he couldn't tell where it was going to go.
