Democrats Accuse Recused Nunes of Launching Own Russia Probe

Michael Flynn, National Security Advisor to President Donald Trump, attends a press conference on February 10, 2017 in the East Room of the White House.

As the Russian Federation investigation has consumed Washington, congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump have repeatedly attempted to shift the focus to questions about "unmasking", charging that Obama administration officials intentionally revealed the names for political reasons.

Nunes is blatantly ignoring his agreement to recuse himself from the investigation and acting to cripple that investigation.

"This is an incredibly inappropriate action, and it is a matter that the House Ethics Committee must look at promptly". However, under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, those agencies can collect information on a foreign target and "incidentally" collect communications by or about an American, without a warrant. The panel also reportedly subpoenaed three government agencies for information that could shed light on potential surveillance abuses by Obama officials.

When intelligence agencies are surveilling the electronic communications of foreign individuals and come across a US citizen, either as a name mentioned during a monitored conversation or as a participant in the conversation, the identities of the USA citizens are protected. Trump tweeted, referring to the Federal Bureau of Investigation director he abruptly fired.

Democrats in the House Intelligence Committee blocked interviews of key witnesses in the committee's ongoing investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 presidential election, Politico reported Thursday, citing sources.

The Senate Intelligence Committee voted unanimously on May 25 to authorise its chairman, Republican Senator Richard Burr, and its top-ranking Democratic, Mark Warner, to issue subpoenas that would force the attorney to respond to their demands.

London attack: The hero police officer who rugby-tackled a knifeman
In an early morning raid in east London, British counter-terrorism police detained more people today. Police said Butt was known to security services but there had been no evidence of "attack planning".

Democrats on the committee criticized the move, saying they didn't consent to the unmasking subpoenas. "That authority should have been delegated to [Rep.] Mike Conaway [R-Texas] in consultation with myself".

Despite recusing himself from the Russian Federation investigation, Nunes signed all seven subpoenas, Fox News reported, describing his actions as "standard practice".

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House intelligence committee says it is issuing subpoenas for Michael Flynn and Michael Cohen — President Donald Trump's former national security adviser and his personal lawyer — as well as their businesses as part of its investigation into Russian activities during last year's election.

The latest example came Wednesday afternoon, when Nunes issued three subpoenas targeting documents regarding former Obama administration officials in his own probe of unmasking - without getting sign-offs from the House Democrats.

Last week, the Senate intelligence committee voted to give broad subpoena power to the two leaders of their investigation, Sen. "But the minority continues to object, claiming they aren't ready".

"Seeing a lot of fake news from media elites and others who have no interest in violations of Americans' civil liberties via unmaskings", Nunes tweeted.

Still, President Trump has downplayed the investigation on Twitter, calling it a witch hunt and an excuse for why Democrats lost. That is the same argument that Trump has advanced repeatedly in the last several weeks as the multiple investigations into his campaign's ties to Russian Federation have gained steam.
