Dem 'concerned' Trump will fire investigators

Mr. Sessions refused to say whether he and President Trump discussed former FBI Director James Comey's handling of an investigation into possible collusion between President Trump's campaign and Russian Federation during the election campaign before the president fired Mr. Comey on May 9. "Sad!" the US President tweeted.

Trump's Twitter response followed days of intensifying criticism of Mueller from some conservatives who have charged the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director and his team with political bias and have claimed his relationship to Comey and an earlier meeting with Trump amount to conflicts of interest.

Mr. Sessions, a senior member of President Trump's Cabinet and an adviser to his election campaign a year ago, had a series of tense exchanges with Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee during about 2½ hours of testimony as they pressed him to recount discussions with the Republican president. The tweet was not confirmation that the president or his attorney has been informed by the Department of Justice or Mueller that Trump is the subject of an investigation.

In a series of statements on Twitter Thursday, Trump called special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 campaign a "WITCH HUNT" based on the "phony" premise of possible collusion between Russia and a cadre of Trump campaign associates.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, told AFP he now has "13 attorneys on board, with several more in the pipeline".

That will only add to a sense of foreboding that pervades the White House, from the crammed collective workspaces of junior officials all the way to the Oval Office.

Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives' Intelligence Committee, which is conducting a parallel Russian Federation probe, said on Twitter that Congress "must compel responses using whatever process necessary".

On Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence took what he later described as a "very routine" step of hiring outside counsel to represent him.

There has been no indication that Mueller told Trump to fire Comey. He also said Trump had privately urged him to pull back on the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn - a claim that the president has denied.

Brand was sworn in as associate attorney general on May 22. "However, nothing has changed", said Ian Prior, a Justice Department spokesman.

Mueller briefed Senators Wednesday on his work.

"Even his staunchest supporters will balk at such a blatant effort to subvert the law", Feinstein said.

"The Fake News Media hates when I use what has turned out to be my very powerful Social Media - over 100 million people!"

"I think, frankly, our story shows that the president is by no means out of the woods as far as the investigation goes", the Post's Barrett told NPR.

"He's already admitted publicly himself that he'd already made a decision to fire Comey and has also said he did so to end the Russian Federation investigation", Akerman said, pointing to an interview Trump did with NBC News' Lester Holt last month.
