Cristiano Ronaldo Accused of Tax Fraud by Spanish State Prosecutor

14 Juin, 2017, 12:48 | Author: Marc Bacque

Prosecutors in Spain allege the Real Madrid player defrauded the government of about $16 million in taxes from 2011 to 2014.

In its brief, the prosecutor's office points out that crimes are caused by "hiding from the treasury the income generated in Spain by the image rights", which is a "voluntary and conscious" breach of one's tax obligations in Spain. This is a developing story, more details to follow.

Last month, tax officials said Ronaldo adjusted his tax declarations and paid an extra 6 million euros ($6.7 million) in 2014.

Previous year he won his fourth Ballon d'Or, placing him within one of the amount won by his rival, Lionel Messi of Argentina.

Ronaldo's agency, GestiFute, had previously maintained he was up to date on his taxes.

Messi was found guilty of evading some 4.1 million euros in taxes, also in relation to the exploitation of his image rights.

The prosecutor's office filed the lawsuit against Ronaldo yesterday to a court in the Madrid district of Pozuelo de Alarcon.

Last year, it was reported that leaked documents suggested that the soccer superstar avoided tax on income held in offshore accounts.

"There is no off shore structure for evading taxes", Gestifute said in a statement.

Ronaldo denied the accusations through his representatives late yesterday.

According to the complaint, after signing his contract with Real Madrid in 2008, Ronaldo "simulated" ceding his image rights to a shell company based in the British Virgin Islands, a tax haven in the Caribbean.
