Confederations Cup: Mexico frustrate Portugal

  • Cristiano Ronaldo in focus after Confederations Cup tie

European Champions Portugal and Gold Cup kings Mexico played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in their opening Confederations Cup Group A match in the Russian city of Kazan.

On the 21st minute there was a historic event in the history of football - the main referee Nestor Supply canceled goal Pepe, after consultation with videoassistance.

Substitute Cedric Soares looked like being the European champions' hero with his 86th-minute deflected shot, but Moreno's header from a corner spoiled the Southampton defender's celebration of his first global goal to snatch a 2-2 draw for Mexico.

Portugal thought they had snatched victory in the closing stages of the match, as Cedric Soares' deflected effort found the corner of Mexico's net with four minutes of normal time remaining. Too bad for Portugal as they left a stoppage time goal and Mexico earned a 2-2 draw.

Portugal and Ronaldo will take on hosts Russian Federation in Moscow in their next Group A fixture this Wednesday, and a win would be enough to see them occupy top spot in the group.

New Zealand are at the bottom of the group with no points.

Video replays were again consulted, but no change was made to the initial decision to award the goal.

The veteran forward was one of the standout performers in Portugal's Euro 2016 triumph a year ago, and he seems to have continued his form for the Seleccao in the Confederations Cup as well.

Sekulow Can't Decide Whether Trump is Under Investigation
Donald Trump's new attorney, Jay Sekulow , burst into the public consciousness this weekend with a series of fiery - if contradictory - interviews on Sunday morning news shows.

"We wanted to win, of course, but we have to be satisfied with this result against the European champions", Chicharito said.

Against Mexico, Portugal had to wait to find out that the score would stay at 0-0 in the first half when Nani's shot was overruled for an offside call that went unflagged in an earlier phase of play.

Ronaldo added in his post-match interview: "We are calm and we have to think about the next game".

Prior to that, Portugal had twice taken the lead in the contest.

Ronaldo is rumoured to have demanded a move from Madrid after Spanish prosecutors accused the former Manchester United man of defrauding the state of £13million in taxes.

"In the end it was a well-deserved result after how we played today", Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio said.

And on the video referral system (Portugal had a goal ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee): "It's the new rule".

And the star man for Mexico was Jonathan dos Santos, who pulled the strings from the centre of the park for his side, while also pressing hard off the ball.
