Committee carousel: Comey skates by the tough questions

The latter testified that Trump urged him to ease off the probe around Flynn, but the USA president said that was something he did not do.

Last Thursday, Comey claimed in his congressional testimony that the president said he "hoped" the now-fired FBI director should drop the investigation into former national security adviser Mike Flynn, who has been accused of inappropriate contact with Russian Federation.

He was also careful to say it would be up to a special prosecutor, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief Robert Mueller, to decide whether Trump should be investigated for obstruction of justice in trying to steer the Russian Federation probe and in sacking Comey. Would you be willing to speak under oath to give your version of events?

The president, through his attorney, denied ever having said this to Comey, but it's Comey's word against Trump's, and Trump's word is beyond worthless. "Yesterday showed no collusion, no obstruction", Trump said at a Rose Garden news conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

Trump branded Comey a "leaker" for indirectly providing to reporters the contents of memos he wrote after their private conversations.

"But in the meantime, no collusion, no obstruction, he's a leaker, but we want to get back to running out great country...." In his hearing, Comey outlined out how Trump had asked him to drop the investigation into his former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

According to CNN, Mr Trump's outside counsel Marc Kasowitz is planning to file a complaint against Mr Comey with the Justice Department Inspector General and the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Pro-Trump Republicans who were pleased by Comey some seven months ago may now concur with the president's assessment of Comey as a "showboat".

"Who would do that?"

Trump says James Comey's testimony about Mike Flynn's probe is not true
Trump stopped short of saying that Comey lied under oath at the hearing, which occurred a month after Trump fired him on May 9. The request from the Journal sought recordings or transcripts of any recordings made after January 20 at the White House.

Spokesman Spicer declined to say then that Sessions enjoyed Trump's confidence, though spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said later in the week that the president had confidence "in all of his Cabinet".

During his Thursday testimony, Comey said he hoped Trump would produce the tapes if he had them. This week, the big story was former FBI Director James Comey's testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Asked about the "tapes" he most likely invented on Friday, Trump told reporters, "I'll tell you about that sometime in the near future". Richard Burr, the North Carolina Republican who heads the intelligence committee, has not commented on the issue, but he and Warner have pledged to follow the inquiry wherever it may lead them. At the time, Trump seemed to grasp how ethically fraught it was for Bill Clinton and Lynch to even leave open the possibility that they had discussed an ongoing investigation into Hillary. As Trump has said of the tapes', we may find out over a very short period of time.

In the wake of Comey's testimony and Trump's rebuttal, the American public has been left with the hard decision.

TRUMP: Remember how nice you used to be before I ran?

Comey said that he'd carefully documented his interactions with Trump because he anxious Trump would misrepresent them, and accused the administration of spreading "lies, plain and simple" about the reasons for his firing.

Although Trump professed to want to focus on his policy agenda, which GOP lawmakers and many White House aides have advised, the president relished offering his own defense after tweeting similar reactions early in the day.

The House Intelligence Committee has submitted two letters to the administration related to the Comey revelations surrounding his meetings with Trump: one to the Department of Justice's special counsel Robert Mueller for Comey's personal memos, and a second to White House counsel Don McGahn, requesting information on any possible "recordings or memoranda of Comey's conversations with President Trump".
