Comey statement: Trump expected 'loyalty,' called Russia 'a cloud' that impaired ability

Comey magnified the political crisis engulfing the White House by releasing his opening statement ahead of a blockbuster appearance on Capitol Hill on Thursday.

"The president appeared to threaten him in their last phone call on April 11: "(Trump said), 'I have been very loyal to you, very loyal; we had that thing you know.' I did not reply or ask him what he meant by 'that thing.'.

WASHINGTON | With fired FBI Director James Comey's highly anticipated congressional testimony just a day away, the White House and its allies are scrambling for ways to offset potential damage. He then said, "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go". He is a good guy.

Comey's prepared statement released by the committee appears to confirm some recent reports about his interactions with President Donald Trump, including the president's request for loyalty.

And Comey confirms earlier reports, which sources had confirmed to NPR, about his solo Oval Office conversation on February 14 with Trump the day after Flynn had been asked to resign after he misled Vice President Pence about his conversations with the Russian ambassador during the transition. The 10-year Treasury yield held rose to 2.18 percent from 2.15 percent late Tuesday.

Comey said he told then-president-elect Trump on January 6 in a briefing in Trump Tower that Trump himself was not being investigated.

Comey testifies before Congress, confirming that the FBI is investigating "the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia's efforts".

"Regardless, it was very concerning, given the FBI's role as an independent investigative agency". The President brought up the dossier that he had been briefed on at Trump Tower.

"It took a lot of guts", Trump said.

There's only one way to resolve that, Grassley said, and he doesn't think that's likely.

"If that isn't obstruction of justice, I don't know what is", Toobin said. Comey had confirmed that the FBI was investigating possible links between Russian Federation and the Trump presidential campaign at the hearing.

Comey, who was sacked by the president earlier this spring, is expected to be asked Thursday about his investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as well as allegations that Flynn had improper communications with Russian Federation during the transition from the President Barack Obama administration to the Trump administration.

Meanwhile, Democrats have attacked USA intelligence officials for refusing to answer questions publicly about whether Mr Trump asked them to influence the investigation.

"Comey said he was asked to "lift the cloud": "(Trump) said he had nothing to do with Russia, had not been involved with hookers in Russia and had always assumed he was being recorded when in Russia. "He is eager to continue to move forward with his agenda". Comey mentioned in his statement that he and the president may have had different understandings of the term "honest loyalty".

Comey testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee, but demurs on a slew of questions about the FBI's investigation, particularly in questions about Trump.

Despite the mounting legal questions now shadowing the White House, Trump has needled Comey publicly. On Tuesday evening a person familiar with the situation said Comey had told Attorney General Jeff Sessions that he did not want to be left alone with Trump.

But Comey determined that to offer such an assurance would be unwise, not least because it would have to be corrected should the situation change.

In a contentious Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, Admiral Michael Rogers, head of the National Security Agency (NSA), and Mr Trump's intelligence director Dan Coats said they did not feel that it was appropriate to comment in an open session on classified conversations they have had with the President.

"He said he was considering ordering me to investigate the alleged incident to prove it didn't happen", Comey said.

"I have to be particularly careful about not stepping into the special counsel's lane", McCabe said.

-Comey started making notes on his meetings with Trump, the moment he left their first encounter: "I began to type it on a laptop in an Federal Bureau of Investigation vehicle outside Trump Tower the moment I walked out of the meeting".

"That was true", Comey said.

Comey friend Benjamin Wittes would later explain that Comey had tried to "blend into the background" to avoid a one-on-one interaction with Trump and wanted to avoid "any show of warmth".
