Champions Trophy final: India win toss, elect to field first

Pakistan, entering the tournament ranked eighth out of the eight teams in the tournament, stunned arch-rivals India on Sunday to win the 2017 International Cricket Council Champions Trophy final by 180 runs at Kia Oval in London, England.

It was all a far cry from the Asian giants' opening group match at Edgbaston on June 4 where Pakistan slumped to 164 all out in a thumping 124-run defeat by India.

Pakistan rewrote history books when they defeated archrivals India by a huge margin of 180 runs to clinch the ICC Champions Trophy for first time before a full house at the Oval here on Sunday.

Fakhar hit 12 fours and three sixes before skying a catch off Hardik Pandya but Pakistan, who upset hosts England in the semifinals, had the flawless platform to make the highest total in a Champions Trophy final.

Pakistan, made to bat first for the first time in the tournament, racked up a final-record innings of 338-4, founded on a 128-run opening stand between Fakhar Zaman, who earned his maiden one-day worldwide century with 114, and Azhar Ali, whom Fakhar ran out on 59.

128 The opening stand between Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman, Pakistan's first century stand for the first wicket against India in an ICC ODI event. The victory refreshed memories of the historic 1992 World Cup triumph when Pakistan came back from the verge of elimination to win the coveted crown.

Virat Kohli won the toss and put Pakistan in to bat first.

Leg spinner Shadab Khan trapped Yuvraj Singh right in front but the umpire denied Pakistan's appeal.

Today's match was a one-sided affair, with Pakistan outperforming India in all three departments.

It is only the second century stand for Pakistan against India in any ICC ODI tournament.

But Pakistan skipper Ahmed said that his team never lost confidence even after the drubbing by India to open the Champions Trophy tournament.

"Congratulations to Pakistan. The way they turned things around, it was unbelievable", Kohli said. Boys, you made us happy and proud.

"Fakhar is a great impact player, he played like a champion batsman".

He removed India's top three batsmen - Rohit Sharma (0), Shikhar Dhawan (21) and Kohli (5).

Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez said: "It's a great team effort".

The biggest heroes for Pakistan were rookie opener Fakhar Zaman and left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir.

In reply, India were all out for 158 runs in 30.3 overs.

When Fakhar miscued the impressive Bhuvneshwar Kumar to a back-tracking Ravindra Jadeja at point, India pulled themselves back into contention.

Fakhar had survived being given out off a Jasprit Bumrah no ball on just three, and that error turned out to be the defining moment of the final.

In just his fourth match at this level the 27-year-old Fakhar - who had already posted two ODI fifties - completed a 92-ball hundred including two sixes when he swept Ashwin for his 12th four.
