  • Qatar foreign ministry expressed deep regret at the diplomatic rift with its neighbours

International Consolidated Airlines Group SA's Chief Executive said human error caused the British Airways IT systems crash that left tens of thousands of passengers stranded, the BBC reported.

Speaking at an airline conference in Mexico, the former Aer Lingus boss, said an engineer had disconnected a power supply causing a power surge when it was reconnected, that caused IT systems to fail.

He said that would not have been a problem in itself, but the damage was caused when the power was restored in an uncontrolled fashion.

Mr Walsh, who was attending the summit of the aviation trade body, the International Air Transport Association in Cancun, voiced confidence that there would be no long-lasting harm.

However, some experts say that blaming a power surge is too simplistic.

He said the company would be "happy to disclose details" and that as a result of lessons learned "we'll all be better".

"It's hard for me to understand how to make a mistake in reconnecting the power".

The email said: "This resulted in the total immediate loss of power to the facility, bypassing the backup generators and batteries".

However, he believes the company will bounce back, "It's damaged us, but it hasn't destroyed us in any way".

Still, I was thrilled to get an email from BA a few days later thanking me for choosing the airline for my recent flight and asking if I would like to offer some feedback on my customer experience. Also, there should be fail-safes in place, our correspondent said.

BA has already launched its own investigation, led by its chief executive Alex Cruz.

Following the computer crash, which caused travel chaos for people travelling from Heathrow and Gatwick, Mr. Walsh gave his full backing to Mr. Cruz.
